Bahia principe Tulum/akumal complex - shooting 2/6/19
Hi guys
Just back from BP Akumal and only found out there was a shooting on the tulum hotel beach when we were there. tripadvisor/ShowTo...Peninsula.html Thought I would raise awareness for vigilance. We were never told about this whilst there but TUI thought it important to email and put a letter through the door about someone with measles.: We had a brilliant time and if I knew about this whilst there it would have taken the edge off the experience. There was a police quad on the beach each day and a lot of BP security patrols. I just thought it was the norm. Anyway, just for awareness. Cheers Fluff |

Got me a bit worried 😟 my 18 year old son is off to Rivera Maya on Saturday, his first holiday without us. Is it generally safe?

We thought it was and even walked out the complex to the main road to get the collectivo bus to playa del carmen (PDC). We were going to go back next year. However I’m not so sure I want to go back. I’ve never knowingly been near people with recreational guns so it’s put me off.
We got dropped in the centre of PDC and the streets to get to get to Walmart which were not touristy and looked a bit like this. I didn’t feel comfortable in these streets and we could have been dropped anywhere. I would pay the $25 US next tine for a taxi. It is a wonderful holiday and your son will have a great time but he should stay vigilant. If he’s off to this hotel, the security has been ramped up. |

Thanks. He isn’t staying at that hotel - he is at El Dorado Royale and will hopefully stay within the complex
I’m trying not to worry! |

We were staying at Bahia principe sian kaan at the time of the shooting. We heard from another guest what happened as she was sitting on the beach at the time. As you say Tui never advised us of this however it did not spoil our holiday and loved it so much we would definitely return.

Akumal was excellent. Although the rooms in Sian Kaan look better than akumal. I loved the table service restaurants, such a good experience at those made the holiday.
I think TUI should have made all customers aware so we were more alert when on the beach etc. There was a bigger police and security presence last week both in the hotel and on the beach. Collette, your son will have a great time and staying in a complex will be safer than a lot of other placid he could travel too, even with this incident. |

I’ve stayed at the BP Sian Kaan, this is shocking news to read about! We loved our time there, we even got a taxi at 5:30am to Tulum ruins as it opens early to beat the heat! We walked down the track in pitch black and felt safe. Although the rooms were nicer at the Sian Kaan set in the jungle we actually preferred the buffet and shows at the Akumal, beach was also nice there. I worked out it would have been £800 cheaper to stay at the Akumal!

We're off back to Bahia next week and staying at Akumal so thanks for this. Stayed here 4 times now and never felt unsafe. However I do understand the comment about Walmart. Me and my very young DD at the time walked there from 5th Avenue and I did feel a bit uneasy and it was only lunchtime. We subsequently didn't go back on any of our trips.
