TRIP REPORT: Day 2 Big Buddha & Kowloon – Sunday 22nd September

Well after a relatively early night and with the time difference, it wasn’t a surprise to find that I woke up at 3am but thankfully I drifted back off and then woke up at 7.30am. Hopefully this jetlag wouldn’t be too hard to crack after all!

We left the room at 9.10am ready for an exciting day ahead and one of the things on the trip I was most excited for – the Big Buddha!

We walked to the MTR station again, and then got the train from Sunny Bay to Tung Chung. On the way, we stopped by the 7/11 for some breakfast and drinks – 2 waters and a lemon bun between us (we weren’t sure if we would like it) was $21/£2. And the bun was lovely!

We found the Ngong Ping 360 cable car station without too much difficulty, and collected our Klook tickets, which I had pre-ordered online for £44.76 each, which included a return journey in the crystal cabin. When we got to the cable cars themselves, there was no line so we ended up with a private cabin both ways! Bargain!

The journey took about 20 minutes, and was really lovely. We saw the airport on one side, but then the lush green mountains on the other. It was so exciting when we saw the Buddha’ head peaking over the top!

We had a good wander around the area surrounding the Buddha, which sure, was very commercialised, but also had influences of the typical Chinese architecture which I was excited to see.

We got to the Buddha before long though and started the climb up the 268 steps to the Buddha. We took a couple of breaks for photo ops.

After a wander around the Buddha, we came down to walk around the Po Lin Monastery, which was far more impressive than the Po Lin Monastery.

As we headed back to the cable car, we picked up a Hong Kong magnet for our collection for $30/£3, and a little happy buddha ornament for $18/£2 as a momento of our visit.

By 11am, we were en route back to Tung Chung. We both really enjoyed the excursion.
