Scotland's Castle Trail. Visit Scotland has a planned route. I grew up in Stonehaven & loads of things to visit/see locally.

Lived up there for 18 happy years, travelled all over in all weathers (you could say you can see all 4 seasons in a summers day!).
4 Hours from the Lakes - Take the M6 to Glasgow, head to Loch Lomond on the A82. Stunning, unbelievable that in a few miles you are outside what was one of the largest cities in the World. From there the A83 will take you on a route towards Lochgiliphead - that must be one of the most scenic roads we've every travelled. Drop into Loch Fyne to pick up some of the finest seafood that is possible to buy. No cars in front, none behind, just miles of open road. From there head north up to Oban and Fort William. Oban has a lovely charm, again seafood on the quayside is unbeatable. Get up to Fort William and take to trip to the paradise beach of Morar. The route back on the A82 through Glencoe will take you back to the tip of Loch Lomond. |

Within 4 hrs of the lakes will, I’m afraid, rule out a fair bit of what’s been mentioned. Not that you’ll be stuck for things to do, I just find the further north you go the more stunning the scenery becomes. Some of the beaches on the west coast and islands are amazing. But depending on the time of year the midges can ruin it. What sort of experience you are looking for can make a difference to your best location.

I would def recommend what everyone else is saying, North of the central belt very scenic, esp going though Glencoe. I wouldn't recommend the road trip of Girvan, Ayr and Troon as that can all be done in 1 day, it is a main A77 trunk road with very little scenery and very busy traffic. ( I live on it)

We stayed here theoldconventholidayapartments/ in November. Have another week booked there spring, and possibly going in the summer if we can’t go further afield. Stunning scenery. On the shores of Loch Lomond. We had a day trip to Isle of Skye and another to mallaig. Superb drives. Saying that it was November and DH said it wouldn’t be like that in summer.
We’ve done several self catering accommodations over the years and this apartment was the best by far. Loved the highlands and can’t wait to go back. |

2/3 nights Loch Lomond area 2 nights fort William area Then back south via Oban, would it be doable to visit one of the islands from there? If so which one? This is going to be early/mid September Thanks in advance for any advice x |

You can go to Skye from Fort William but it would add a couple of days on to your trip but really is a beautiful drive. You can get the ferry or the bridge.
You can also go to Mull from Oban and visit Tobermory. I’ve not done this. Either way I think you would need a bit more time. |
