Worst time for love bugs

Just wondering when are they out? I heard September and May but is there any other months and is it the beginning or ends of the months? Also anyone who's been and dealt with them.. is there any repellent or anything you found that kept them off you? Thank you

May is the absolute worst for them. They’re harmless though, just a bit annoying.

Ive been twice in May and never saw a single one, also been once in September and saw a few then, but mainly when we went to the state parks, definitely not a problem and didn't come anywhere near us. Bit like seeing a dragon fly flying around

Have been in May several times and swatted loads on the hire car driving to/from Tampa for Busch Gardens!

In my experience, they don't bother us in person (although like most Florida balconies, we were screened in during the evenings). They are *very* noisy though - and this comes from a person who is partially deaf.

We went in May a few years ago - couldn’t stay by the pool as there were too many.

Is there any particular time during May when they are at their worst? Looking at possibly going at the end of May beginning June next year. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

The love bugs are variable. We usually go in September and have had some trips where they were awful and others where we hardly noticed them. They seem to be worse around the pool and water parks. Last time we went and stayed a Coronado Springs there were loads of dead/dying on the pathways. I assume Disney had sprayed something but hadn’t cleaned them up. That was almost worse than them flying around!

I have been several times in May and had never seen or even heard of love bugs! I go early May, first week or maybe first two weeks, never later than that.

I went in September for the first time in 2019 and they were everywhere but they didn’t land on us so I can’t see any need for a repellant. I guessed it was more of a problem if you drive, which we don’t.

We have been every year in mid May since 2011. 50/50 as some years we’ve spent ages sweeping them off the lanai every day and swatting them away at the pool... and then some years we’ve seen none at all. Ditto September.
