My DH accidentally bought coal from the coal yard instead of smokeless fuel. I realised as soon as I got out of the car. There is a definite difference between smokeless fuel and proper coal. The smoke from coal is a lot darker and thicker. Smoke from smokeless fuel, you can still see but it’s not thick and dark. Also doesn’t smell as strong.
I can’t believe they are burning plastic. All the particles surely can’t be good for the chimney.

We had a log burner a couple of years ago. I work for a Fire Authority and was speaking to one of the crew commanders regarding having the chimney swept etc. He told me that if you burn the incorrect things it puts a layer of 'cack' on the walls of the chimney which is potentially flammable. I had to fess up to burning cardboard in there occasionally
