Architectural height in the garden, ideas needed please
We think a bit of this would look quite good in our rear garden. But we have no idea of what we can do. I would love to read some ideas from Dibbers and photos if possible would be great, please.

How much space do you have? One of the bigger bamboos would look great I have Phyllostachis Aureosulcata ( Probably spelled wrong) in mine it makes 20ft and I have it contained in a 'wrap' of old conveyor belt so it can't take over the garden
I also have tetrapanax papyfer rex which goes bald in winter but throughout the summer gets larger and larger leaves until they are about 4ft across by September |

Never use Bamboo unless you keep it in a solid container, it will take over the whole garden, lift patio slabs and generally end up as a nuisance even though it looks good to start with.

That depends entirely on which type of bamboo you get. I have one clump in my garden been there 15 years and getting bigger yes but it doesn't 'creep' (chusquea culeo) only some varieties are invasive. The cheap ones are the most suspect - if a bamboo plant costs you less than £30 it's usually an invasive one

I have a couple of Cynara plants. They grow in one season and get cut down to the ground in autumn. They grow about 12 feet high and have artichoke/ thistle type heads on top! Very ornamental.

Have you considered a Magnolia Bush (though that would take some time to grow?) The Flowers are amazingly fragrant too.

Thanks for the suggestions which DH will consider.
Has anyone got things like statues, pergolas, I.e. something that is not vegetation? |

We have a couple of pergolas around the garden. The largest one has an assortment of plants growing up it, some are evergreen but most aren't. It's a lovely peaceful area with a couple of sun loungers under it, we also have solar lights around the top which is pretty in the evening. The smaller ones mainly have a mixture of clematis and honeysuckle growing up and over them.
