Primark and other large companies

My Brother in law has been told that Primark are to announce many job cuts some from head office and middle management in stores .
Surely their mistake is not being available online .
When we are back my wife loves shopping there . 🤞 they and many others survive as it’s gonna be a hard time for them

I am not a Primark shopper, but was really surprised that they don't do online shopping, but with their massive turnover i can see how difficult this would be. But they would have been very busy if they did, esp casual wearx

I’m not sure primark could have sustained online either l next has had to restrict online shopping immensely and primark turn over a lot more than them. I think a lot of businesses will cut middle management if working from home is successful .

Things will change for them now, but pre-corona, their physical premise model was working very well for them. Hugely successful and having omni-channel would have diluted that and changed their cost model.

It will change now to be a more resilient organisation in all likelyhood. Most organisations are currently looking at their staffing models and who in the org is actually revenue generating vs management overhead.

Should you be sharing that information on here? Someone might now be suffering huge anxiety over whether their job will be there to go back to! 😡

I can see all shops having to do in the short term while social distancing has to be in place. Less people in the shop less staff needed.

Online shopping often does not make a lot of profit.

People order multiple sizes of one item, or lots of different types/colours, then return what they do not want. More people shop with you if returns are free - the seller has those costs to absorb, the seller has to check returns for damage/soiling, has to repackage - they have those costs to absorb.

Primark pile it high and sell it cheap - which works in a shop, but not for online.

I think a lot of retail outlets need a long hard look at themselves and how they deal with online shopping in the future.

Amazon has managed fine but of course that's their core business.

What happened to Next? Bit of a disaster there. John Lewis coped very well as did M & S.

Then we come to those who basically fell apart in the early days. An example is Dunelm. Pretty poor show.

I have no doubt huge changes are coming down the track and that will be a much bigger investment in the online experience and the resilience to maintain it in a crisis

I get you, caj - but you could say that about most companies - and there are several - being discussed on the Dibb right now.

I didn't realise that Primark were not online, however, maybe they'll work out a way to set up the business this way.

Sadly I think you are correct this will be for many stores as customers capacity will be reduced therefore less staff needed, let’s hope they move online too it would be a huge operation, I will definitely be back in the stores when they open try & support the High Street, love to actually see the item I’m buying 😉
Stay safe ❤️🌈X
