I’m not really sure I understand your question. Restaurants have to cover their overheads, including basic staff wages, and the only way they can do that is through the price of their food/drinks. So they charge whatever is necessary to cover their obligations and make profit.
As far as I’m concerned, the price we pay (according to the menu) is for the food we order. How the owner chooses to divvy that up is up to them. I then accept that a tip is due on top for the server. If they do a great job, they get the higher end, if not they get less. If you want to break it down, why not look at it that the minimum wage is simply for the server to be there, the tip is for them actually performing their duties?

The question is simple.
There is a menu price which covers getting you your food (the right food to the table). There is an element of service included in this for which the wait staff are paid. Otherwise a restaurant couldn't function. So they get paid wages - this must be for something (it cant be for nothing as you suggest) - My question is what on top of this constitutes the tip. But more so that the fact this isn't defined to me is just dishonest as it allows them do what they do and treat us like much and just routinely increase the %age they expect us mugs to pay for less and less actual service. So simply - what specific activities are they paid for in their wages and what activities are on top that attract the huge hourly rate they expect in tips. No one gets paid just to be there. It would be interesting to see a job description. Edited at 08:45 PM. |

I’m not sure why you need to try and complicate things. You know how tipping works, you know what is expected, but no one can make you do anything so do what you feel is acceptable, and everyone else will do likewise.
And I actually think I’m correct in saying that their basic wage covers them being there. If no customers turn up, they will still get that wage, and won’t have done anything. The basic wage remains the same no matter how many tables they wait. Without trawling through the entire thread, what is your point? You don’t agree with tipping? You want tipping to stop altogether? You want it itemised on your bill? Genuine question.

How much will you leave in the tip jar 😁 or drive-thru? I'm assuming they don't have a tip jar hanging next to the window?

Not complicating at all. It is the simplest of questions.
I know how tipping works and it is a disgrace. They treat customers like mugs. Fundamentally I disagree with the tipping model. However, given that it exists I have two problems - One - it is totally non-transparent and Two - it is utter cynical in that the percentages just go up and up as they just get more and more greedy. My view is their wage covers the basics of the job - turn up on time, take orders and serve the food and drinks. It cant be less than that if the restaurant is to function at all. I cant believe the wage is just to turn up. And that's the thing - it isn't defined and it should be. Maybe read the thread (and the previous one a few months ago). Edited at 10:44 PM. |

I have read the thread, I always read the tipping threads, but I don’t want to read them all again.
As I said, they will still get the basic wage even if no customers turn up, so it is basically for them to just be there. They only get tips if they serve customers. And by definition, the service charge is for service. I wish they didn’t have tipping, it would be so much easier, and I agree, increasing the % is outrageous, but I see it as I get to reduce my bill if the service is less than I’d expect. But we clearly are seeing it differently so there’s no point going around in circles. I hope someone else can answer your question in a way that satisfies you

Except that was my point. According to the article, you aren’t paying for some basic level of service in the menu cost. That’s what the tip is for. If you want any kind of service at all, you have to pay separately for it and you pay this directly to the server via a tip.
Personally, I would argue you are paying for a bit of the basic level of service in the menu price. In Florida it’s around $5. I don’t think that’s enough for the server to live on and neither do I think that the minimum wage of $8 or $9 is enough either. Not for the job they are doing. I think someone working in a restaurant in America should get at least $15 an hour (YMMV). Therefore I’d expect to tip them something to make up the $5 they get from their employer to at least $15 (also to ensure they received the amount the taxman expects them to get). So I’d tip maybe $5 or $10 or so. That’s for minimum service. I’d tip more if the service was good. But that’s just me. It’s not right or wrong, just my opinion. It’s up to you what you want to pay. BTW, what you or I think we should tip is neither here nor there. In America there is a tipping culture. It exists.
And considering almost every restaurant has suggested amounts to tip on the bill - and these tend to be at least 15% or so - are we saying that all restaurants in America are having us on? If most Americans didn’t tip these sorts of amounts, you’d think they’d be arguing about it and they’d be an uproar on social media forcing all the restaurants to change. But, as far as I’m aware, there isn’t. It’s been like this for decades. Edited at 10:13 AM. |
