Go online and search for car values. I've used Parkers in the past who will give a variety of prices for Private sale, dealer part exch etc. If your car has above or below average miles you can pay about £3 for a more accurate value. Other sites will do similar.

We've sold two cars through gumtree. Had several time wasters ie people saying they wanted to come see the car and then not turn up, some cheeky responses ie hundreds less than what we were selling for, just ignored these.

I had to keep reposting the ad too. From memory if you want it to stay on the first page or at the top there's a charge, I just kept re posting the same ad until we finally got offers.

I would also say gumtree is fine if you're not in a rush to sell. Both our cars took a few weeks.

We've sold ours on we buy any car and they offered £500 more than any local dealer and it had been on Auto trader for over 8 weeks with no offers. We were offered the exact same as the online price too.

We sold DWs car to We Buy Any Car a few months ago. Was a nice, easy process.

Got the quote online - I just selected everything as no damage as I knew they would try and knock it down anyway - especially as there were some real problems with the paint - many blotches where it had worn through, almost like something corrosive had been splashed onto it. And on multiple panels, too. And it had a small knock on the front bumper that was slightly out of alignment. As such, selling privately would have been difficult, and returning at the end of the PCP would have incurred a large charge.

We got there and I was expecting a couple of grand to come off the price, but only £400 came off as they just put it down as needing a smart repair on a few areas of paint. I was very pleased with the price - far more than I was expecting. They settled the remaining finance directly and we got the balance straight into our bank account.

We've used We Buy Any Car too and had no problems both times. Infact when selling my dad's car last year we left them to have a think about the price and a week later they'd emailed to say their offer had gone up! We got an extra £400 😀
