We use a local to south west wales chap. £365 round trip from west wales to Gatwick for 5 adults.

Train fares are not bad if you travel off peak and book early. You could get a family railcard maybe?
I used to travel on the Reading to Gatwick service daily for work. As others have said avoid peak times not only because of the cost but from memory they aren't rh2 biggest of trains (only 3 coaches) and some units dont have much space for luggage but very convenient drop off for south terminal

I would definitely take the train, we do this now from Midlands to London.
Much less stressful than driving (and cheaper)
