When should I renew passports?

I need to renew my children's passports, they don't technically run out until February next year but we have a European holiday booked in August (if we can go!) and we miss the 6 month cut off by a couple of days! I don't want to do too soon as it's annoying enough having to do it so early that a lot of the last year is wasted, but equally I don't want to leave it too late with Covid/Brexit delays. Just curious as to what other's risk appetites are like, how close to August would you go?!

I'd probably renew now, I can see then being busy when travel does resume.

We renewed ours in November and they were back with us in 8 days.

I would maybe wait until Easter, but I suspect that the passport office will be inundated once the "older groups" of the UK are vaccinated as they will be keen to get away, and whilst passport renewals are generally spread out, I suspect many let theirs lapse this last year and others will be just about to book and realise they are caught in the same 6 month Brexit trap you have found

I would do it now. I’m only not doing mine now because I’m hoping we will get married in May.

I’ve just renewed online this week. Expires in Nov but thought would get it done while it’s hopefully less busy. Doubt I will need it before May for the 6 month cut off. Hoping we can get away in the summer - anywhere will do 😄

Mine expires in August. Renewed just before Christmas as I need an ESTA for October (hopefully). New passport arrived on Tuesday (so nearly 4 weeks but there were holidays). But my original documents haven't got back to me yet (including a second passport). Wont be happy if they have lost this. If I haven't got this back by tomorrow I will be chasing them on Monday.

Dh applied on line for his passport last Wednesday. On Thursday I sent his old passport off in the post. Had an email today to say that the new passport has been sent to us in the post.

I think an 8 day turnaround is very fast. As soon as people get the green light to go I can see there being a huge delay at the passport office

I seem to remember that our original passport took about 8 days to be returned after the new one arrived, liek you I was just about to chase
