Mobile Disputing PPI accompany fee

Just wondering if anyone has any advice. So a couple of years ago I went to a PPI company (stupidly) to see if I had anything worth putting a claim in for. I've had a few pay out and always been happy to pay the company their fee as they did all the ground work.

Then I found paperwork to state I had PPI on a HSBC loan from way back when. The company had been in touch with HSBC but nothing was coming it. In the end I spoke to them and said I had this paperwork and I decided to go into HSBC and give them my documents to prove I was who I said I was, and a copy of the old loan agreement. 6 months later I heard nothing so called the claim company who then said I had to go to HSBC with my documents, which I disputed as I had already done that. But, I did it again to make sure. 6 weeks later I get a letter directly to me from the bank not the claim company asking me to go back into branch with my documents again as they couldn't find me (account was in my maiden name) So a few weeks later I got a letter from HSBC with an offer, which I signed and sent back recorders delivery. I again had to go back into the branch to sign stuff. To cut a long story short, I eventually got the payout. It was all done via myself and HSBC, other than the initial account search. The bank wouldn't deal with the claim company so I had to do it all. Now I have always been happy to pay the fee they've charged because they've done the ground work. However, this time, I've done everything, several phone calls, letters, visits to the bank, constant chasing of the claim company to see what's happening with no answers from them. They want me to pay 30%, which is £1000. I've put the money to one side anyway, but I really begrudge paying them the full amount when they've done absolutely nothing.

I'm well aware I signed paperwork to say I understood the fee process etc, but why should they get such a large chunk of money when all they've done is the initial search?

Has anyone ever contested anything like this before? I know I'm going to have to pay it, but if I can dispute it I will!

Sorry it's so long winded...just would like to know a bit more before I discuss it with them.

Thanks!

Probably because thats how all these claim companies work. They do very little, which you can do yourself anyway, and then claim large amounts as a fee. Its one reasin why you shouldn't sign up to these sort of companies. I do wonder what their next trick will be after the 2019 deadline for PPI claims is here will be.

The onus was on you, when you engaged the company, to study their terms, conditions and fees.

Lesson learned sadly.

Have to agree unfortunately, an expensive lesson. Once they've done anything at all, no matter how little, you'll find they'll be looking for their cut

If I am reading this right and they tried and failed but you were successful I’d at least try to reduce the amount you owe them. Good luck.

A mate had the same, the PPI company tried, failed to get anything, a few years had passed and he found the documents when moving house, contacted bank again and they paid out, a few months pass and a letter arrives for 30% of the money he claimed, he wrote back and said it wasnt on and they failed in the claim and he owed them nothing
they wrote back and said he had signed a contract and they would sue him for the monies owed, he made them a offer ( which from memory was 10% ) and they accepted

Not ppi related but years ago my mate put his house on the market. The house didn’t sell and he told them to take it off the market. House prices crashed so he had no viewings but the estate agent still showed it as for sale despite him burning the for sale sign in a bonfire. Fast forward 10 years and he did sell the house (through a shared ownership scheme). The estate agents were onto him like a flash demanding their money and he had no choice to pay.

How did the PPI company find out you'd been paid directly?

Did they successfully find any account with PPI and advise you of such? if not, I'd be telling them to bolt as they've not actually done anything on your behalf

You could always offer them a vastly reduced 'token of goodwill' as Matt suggested

Unfortunately that's how they earn their money.
