When we got off at the station (Universal City) there are free Universal buggies that take you to the park entrance. We were there before opening and it was very cheap as I recall.

Santa Monica is an ideal location really and loads to easily do in and within that area. I stay at the Fairmont Mirarmar as it ticks the right boxes for me - historical old film star hotel, right by the beach (they even have their own bear area and beach bar which is unusual there) and right by PCH to drive to Malibu for lunch etc
