Declaring food on customs form
We always declare we have food as we always take our own coffee. Question from daughter in law due to fly out next week- do you need to declare if all you have in your bags are crisps & sweets? Surely most tourists entering USA has food of some sort in their bags especially if they have children?

There have been a few posts about this recently. We declared minimal amounts of food and there were no issues. Would rather declare than have any problems when trying to enter America

In theory - yes. You only need to get an awkward Customs Officer and you could be there for ages. Best to say "Yes" to question 11 and then be laughed at because when asked, you answer chips (not crisps) and candy. We take tea bags and HP sauce but I still put "Yes" on the form. If they don't want you to declare trivial things then they need to print that on the forms. Until they do I'm not risking a $10,000 fine.

The automatic machines are not as in depth ref questions as the customs form. We ended up ticking yes on the customs form but no on the automatic machine.
However when the Immigration Officer asked did we have food I told him we did have filter coffee and cereals etc.

I've always put "no"! In future I'll own up to the crisps and sweets off the plane!
