Not a dentist but I have similar, mine has been on going for 18 months or so. Its not tooth ache its my gum and jaw bone below the gum just hurts like a really bad bruised feeling.
Something finally showed up on x-ray the other month and its decay inside the root. Very odd for it to happen as there is no decay in the main tooth itself. To cut a long story short I finally am having it taken out by the dental hospital the week after next. Its not straight forward as the root had grown into my jaw bone so it involves more than standard extraction. Hopefully though after this I can finally get on with life without this gum problem that flares up as and when. I really hope they find out what is causing your problems and it does not take as long as mine has.
