Vet stress
So I have a 21 year old cat called Smudge.
He has been on onsoir for 3 years for his arthritis. Every 6 months he has to have a medication review and I pay 30 pound for the privilege, all that happens is they weigh him and they try to listen to his heart. Which can never be heard as he stress purrs. I accept this cost but it's so stressful getting him there. Trying to get him in his box (three scratches and a ripped top to show for it) then he throws up over himself in the car and then lies in it So then I have to wipe him down. And my other cat won't stop hissing at him. All this for a weight check, which I have to repeat in a month because he has lost weight (6.2kg to 5.8kg in 6 months). Wish I could just weigh him at home and not drag him to the vets. Poor smudge and I need a lie down And breathe!

Aww poor Smudge he looks like butter wouldn't melt. Sorry no advice but he is so adorable. Could you maybe call the vets and explain and see if they have any tips.

My Eric is also 21 and needs to see the vet every couple of months. He whinges in his carrier but he’s ok once we get there.
Have you tried something like Feliway to relax him before putting him in his carrier ? Or even catnip, to put him in a stupor ! Good luck ! |

DIL gets round the weight thing by
Having a blanket Opi uses that has hoops sewn on and suitcase schales at the ready When he’s on the blanket sleeping it’s a quick 2 person job gather the hoops up attack the scales and then phone the vet with weight to adjust his meds /diet if need be £5 for a phone consult |

Feliway doesnt affect him and he is soo stressed that cat nip has no affect now. He has had a few surgerys on his teeth and it makes him extremely stressed about the vets now. Plus there was alot of dogs today.

I would talk to your vet about it. It is not good to put any animal especially an elderly one under so much stress.
Firstly I would ask if you can weight him at home. I weight my cats every now and then I firstly weight myself then weight myself while holding the cat. If that’s not an option I would ask about a sedative, similar to ones given out for animals that dislike fireworks. |

Good idea. I will phone them up. He used to be ok but as he has got older he gets so stressed. Plus he has a heart murmur, so I'd like to avoid stress.

Wow! Amazing to get a cat to 21! It must be a lovely home. If I were you I would do the weight at home and just phone it in. I wouldn’t put the cat through the stress of a trip to the vet. Not entirely necessary either to keep an eye on the heart unless smudge deteriorated which of course is a different scenario. We had the same recently with our 16 year old cat. I had the vet pre agree to do a house call if necessary but in the end she was so sick for the last 24 hours that it was a stress free journey for the heartbreaking decision to put her to sleep. It was the one time she did not battle with us going to the vet. There are calming tablets too which the vet may prescribe. Best of luck, a lucky cat x
