NY First Timers Bus Tour and Food

Hi

We are going to NY on 8th June for 4 nights, would like to do a bus tour can anyone recommend a good one, also if possible to include a boat to see the Statue of Liberty, not bothered about going into the statue, we have seen some tours on the internet but would prefer to go with a recommendation.

With food we have a continental breakfast included at our hotel, during the day we will probably eat on the go, however would be interested to know of any places that you have eaten in at the evening we are staying at The Hotel, Times Square, have got a pizza place noted, but would like to try an American Diner type place, we like Steak, Burgers etc but do not do fine dining, somewhere with a bit of character, also are the Hard Rock Café, Planet Hollywood restaurants worth a visit or are they expensive have visited both in Orlando but would only visit one in NY.

Any recommendations that you have will be most welcome, we will most likely be in the Times Square area at night, and will travel around during the day, as this is our first visit.

Thank you very much.

A lot of the bus tours include a boat trip. You can also take the Staten Island Ferry and it's free, you can see the Statue from the ferry. You can get off on Staten Island or just go back on the same ferry. Tic Toc Diner for American style diner. However you could always try Ellen's Stardust on Broadway which is fantastic as the waiting staff sing whilst you are dining.

We didn't do any bus tours in the end although we had planned to get tickets. Don't feel that we missed anything as we got some guide books (I personally loved the Everyman guide book) and a pop up map with subways on it. For food I just started trawling the Dibb for recommendations on eating places and started making a list according to area. It took me a while but it was a great help.
We paid for the ferry to Ellis Island and am so pleased we did as we got really close to Liberty on the way. It's also an interesting place to visit.

We used the red sightseeing buses operated by Grayline last year. We got a good deal on the 48 hour 4 loops tour, and actually spread the ticket over three days by doing the evening tour on our first day (at 18:00 which triggered the start of the 48 hour period) which got us orientated around Manhattan and Brooklyn, used the Downtown Loop and Brooklyn Loop tours the second day, then the Uptown Loop on day three.

However, the city is also very manageable by using the Subway and walking, although we did find that using the bus meant we saw a lot more of the sights.

To see the SoL, you can also use the free Staten Island ferry that passes close by the statue - takes about an hour for the round trip.

Regarding food, we found John's Pizzeria on 44th West really good value - three of us ate for around $40 including drinks (2 starters, a huge pizza and drinks).

Hi

Thank you for your replies. We will def look at a bus ticket to cover while there, we like pizza so again thanks for the recommendation.

As you say it will be best to use the buses and walk to make the best of the sights, thanks for the tip ref SOL.
