A Cowboy Christmas: November 2018. Pre-trippie - a word from Jessie

Jessie the Yodelling Cowgirl writes:

Howdy folks! Gather round and I’ll tell y’all a tale. A tale of two pioneers who travelled over land and sea, to celebrate a real purty cowboy Christmas.

Lemme introduce y’all to our pioneers. Firstly, there’s Wild Gill Hiccup.

She may have a fancy job at the Ministry o’ Yodellin’ but she’s still the same down-home gal I always knew. She still sings the old cowboy songs, but they sound a little different in the big city. Why, just last week she was singin’:

“Oh show me a home
Where the buffalo roam
And I’ll show you
A messy carpet”

Anyway, that’s Wild Gill for ya. Then there’s Pardner Pete.

He works for a big fancy store in the city. He’s so good on a horse they say he’s never knowingly unsaddled, and he can dish up bangers’n’beans like ya never tasted. He brews a good billy-can o’coffee too.

So I think I’ll hand over to ma buddy Wild Gill to tell ya more. See y’all later folks!

Hello all, and welcome to our latest adventure. If you’ve read our trippies before, you’ll know that since 2008 (which was, not entirely coincidentally, when we joined the Dibb) we have visited a Disney park every year. Mostly DLP, with two trips to WDW. But this was almost the year it didn’t happen.

You see, we are in the middle of a Big Savings Project.

Having once again priced up WDW and made plans to go back in 2020, our attention was caught by the growing number of posts about another Disney location - Tokyo!

We knew a little about it, thanks to the lovely and much missed Geoff (of Dibb and Dibbcast fame) who had talked to us about his visit there with his husband Darrin. They had kindly sent us some DVDs of their visit, which gave us a taste of the two parks, Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo Disney Sea, as well as an introduction to Tokyo itself and a quick peek at Mount Fuji.

The more we read books, posts and trippies, and the more we watched videos, the more we wanted to see these amazing places for ourselves. Only one problem - it wouldn’t be cheap.

So we decided to put WDW on the back burner and start saving for Tokyo in 2020 for our Silver Wedding. And to boost the savings, we decided even DLP could wait a year or so. We did have a budget trip to Paris itself in March, for Peter’s birthday, but otherwise we were tightening our belts and saving for Japan.

But then...

Eurostar had one of their £29 sales. And of course we couldn’t resist. Yes, it was to Gare du Nord rather than Marne la Vallee, but that’s perfectly doable, we’ve done it before. And yes, it means the train times are not the best, but we figured we could make it work.

So we started pricing up the absolute cheapest trip possible. And came to the conclusion that it honestly didn’t work out much more expensive for 3 nights onsite at the Cheyenne with free half-board, than an offsite stay paying for our own food.

But could we afford it and still continue saving for Tokyo?

A quick flashback. For the last few years my Dad has been writing a history of his local parish magazine, from its beginnings in the 1940s to the mid-70s (Volume 2 will be the next project!) As I’m a qualified proofreader, I have spent several months proofing it thoroughly, with a bit of copy-editing thrown in - making suggestions about the content, not just correcting typos and tidying up the punctuation. It’s been a heck of a task, and it’s not finished yet. If you want an analogy for the amount of work involved, imagine asking Michaelangelo if he’d mind freshening up the paint on your kitchen ceiling.

Anyway, as a present for all my hard work, Dad offered to pay for our DLP trip. Yaaay! So we did a few quick price comparisons and found that Walt Disney Travel Company (WDTC) worked out cheaper than DLP’s own site, and we could book a room near the main building for the same price as one further away. Not that this is a big deal at the Cheyenne, as it really only saves you a few minutes’ walk, but on a cold November morning it will be a nice perk.

So that was that. As for the timing, we’ve managed to tack it on to the end of our existing November holiday, which consists of visiting Peter’s family in Preston and mine in South Wales. This works out well for our lovely cat-sitter Jo, who gets two uninterrupted weeks in our flat. But it does mean an epic travel day from Wales to London and then to Paris, and on to DLP. We could have flown from Cardiff, true, but the Eurostar deal had to be both ways, and the price was too good to miss.

And that’s it really. As I write this, we’ve finished the Preston leg of the holiday and are coming to the end of our stay with my parents in Llantwit Major. It’s been lovely to see everyone, and we can’t wait to top off the holiday by wishing Mickey a happy 90th birthday and enjoying the Christmas festivities in our magical happy place.
