I don't wear mine, I find rings restrict blood flow or fall off anyhow. My MIL was apoplectic when she saw I do not wear my engagement or wedding ring. It is a thing, and has no bearing whatsoever on the state of our lovely marriage.
I only wear mine when we go out.
Hubby has never removed his.

Jewellery is so personal that if she felt it needed a little more for her to wear it comfortable and often then she had every right to sort it. Same with your sister, she wears a ring she likes when she likes it.

I think Kate’s ring which is Diana’s old one is awful and doesn’t suit her at all but she has very carefully worn it for a limited number of occasions when it’s called for as it seems very unpractical for day to day wear. She’d be lynched if she attempted to do anything with the shape/design though!
Wow...this has jumped up a notch or two on the assumptions table.
Don't think the OP said any of those things you have suggested but more that she wouldn't do it herself.

I am not hugely sentimental, I will never get rid of my engagement or wedding rings, but I barely wear them and would happily replace them over resizing them if I felt the need. I don't care about what jewellery people buy or wear, it has no bearing on their marriage at all.

I sit in the camp of think carefully before you buy and when you do buy a sentimental item then it's for life.

I assume the ring was 'handed down' If so she should have either declined it if she didn't like it or if she accepted it then leave it as it was.

I think Harry designed it himself Tom using pieces from his mother’s collection along with new stones that had some meaning. Can’t remember the story but it appeared sentimental at the time.

Has it occurred to anyone her husband may have suggested the alteration?

I know some people who have done this to commemorate a wedding anniversary or the birth of a child.

He bought her an eternity ring as well I believe, possibly as a push present if indeed she did.

A push present?

Harry bought his wife an eternity ring because he was so delighted she had given birth to their first child.
