Sorcerer's Hat official removal date announced by Disney

Disney has confirmed the start date for the removal of the contentious Sorcerer’s Hat icon at Disney's Hollywood Studios.

The hat will be removed in phases starting from 7 January 2015.

The pin merchandise station, located beneath the hat will be relocated to Sunset Ranch on Sunset Boulevard beginning 7 January.

The icon first made an official appearance on 28 September 2001, it replaced the Earful Tower as the park's icon in marketing material. The hat polarised peoples opinions with some liking the icon and others disliking it due to it blocking the view to the Chinese theatre.

I've only ever known HS with the hat so will miss it

I have only been since it was up so it really does symbolise HS for us. Will be weird to visit in May and not see it there but always interested to see what way things will develop.

Thats going to cost Disney a fortune, imagine all the Tshirts/Cups and other items that had the four major theme park icons, now it will be just be 'the Tree of Life', 'Epcot' and Cinderella's castle'

Mind you, those items will be a collectors item now

I'll miss it, it's the only thing I've known to symbolise HS. Sounds like they've got massive changes ahead there. I'm also disappointed about the backlot tour closing.
