It will all be down to sales, or lack of. They base the plane numbers on historical information and decide 1 or 2 or even 3 per day from Gatwick. Then they monitor the sales and have to move quick to 'compact' the passengers onto a reduced number of planes if the seats aren't selling.

If they leave it too late the disater for them is 55% of seats sold on 2 flights and that means they can't compact. hence they have done this to you so far out as they aren't getting the interest in the seats.
I much prefer the VS27. In nice and early. With only 1 flight from Gatwick there is probably another plane sat there not utilzed so in case of a mechanical issue you can switch which most times you can't. Win win.

We had the VS27 in the ash cloud year, the second episode of ash in May 2010 when they were talking about closing the airspace again. Our 27 took off but the later 16 didn't.

We were the ones who didn't take off!
What a great drive that was back to Cardiff!
Ringing DVC to cancel our booking. Arriving home and cancelling 21 ADR's
We rebooked for some weeks later and darn me we got caught again! The VS27 which was going out at 11.20 took off at 4.50pm. How the crew were 'in hours' I dont know!
Now that was a late arrival at SSR.

We got there only to find that the Howard Johnson had overbooked and didn't have our room! They put us in the Wyndham for 3 nights, not impressed. I think they assumed we wouldn't make it due to the ash flight disruption.
