Put her name as it is today. Then if asked, you reply with it as it is today !

As said on other threads, these are not questions to run background checks. They're security questions. When you're in front of the immigration officier, n the event you're asked what your mother's name is, give the name you've entered on the ESTA

that's basically the same kind of questions as your bank's security question : what was the make of your first car.

We both seem to be saying the same things about these questions these last couple of days

At least they're nice simple ESTA questions, not "moral maze" ones !

One of these days Google are going to sue me for royalties or use of copyright but didn't you use about 40 screen shots leaving MCO?

Someone on here about 6 months ago suggested that your parent's names determined if you were a bona fide traveller.

Joan just scraped by luckily with Richard. Wonder if she'd been refused had it been David.

Use her name as it is now (or last was, if she's passed) don't worry about birth certificate names - either yours or hers! For my ESTA, I used my mum's current name which is still the same as when she had me (so my maiden name). For DH, his mum has remarried since she had him - also used her current name as she hasn't used our surname in over 20 years. All went through fine.

I also believe they're used more for security (either for you to answer in person, or to cross check to previous applications for consistency) than for complete background checks. They would need more info if they were going into that depth of search. So no need to overthink any of the questions.
