Stay at GC or no? Any recommendations?

Hi all

Heading LV in August (I know..completely mad time to be going, but only time we have available) and we want to go to the GC for a day, maybe an overnight. I'm meeting up with a friend there, who lives in Flagstaff, so we thought we'd go to the GC - for "food with a view" as such! Thinking of staying overnight, and seeing either sunrise/sunset.

Anybody got any thoughts..we've 6 nights in Vegas but I'm looking for downtime - I know..a total contradiction! I was originally looking at West Coast coastal area, but we couldn't get flights (I had a Red Select Voucher from Virgin and west coast was all booked up. We're staying in The Signature at MGM, as this really needs to be a down-time holiday. So I don't mind a day off in the GC as I'm not as pushed on spending all my time inside in casinos..but more beside the pool drinking cocktails.

Also..can we do ANY hiking in the GC in August or will we just die from the heat? We are keen hikers already so it's not a fitness issue - more a heat issue!

We stayed at The Bright Angel Lodge last year. Basic but fine for a night or two. Had own bathroom but even cheaper rooms available if you are willing to share. Hard read reviews saying walls were paper thin but we had no issues.(took ear plugs just in case)

Less than a minute walk to the rim edge.

Booked a year in advance though to get what we wanted.

We stayed at yavapai lodge which was the only one available for our dates (i think we booked at about 9-10 months out), it was absolutely fine - better than expected in fact! motel type style. Personally i think it is worth staying inside the park so you can do sunrise AND sunset really easily .

Just seen your countdown - not sure you will actually get anywhere inside the park at the short notice but you could check... esp with it being august so may not be as busy due to heat? x

So sorry about the long delay to reply - have been back at work and it's been mad and I'm only now starting to think our trip will actually happen!

You're both right...not even a hope of getting a place to stay..so at least now I can decide what I do WANT to do... right now it only involves relaxing, cocktails and sleep. I think we might drive to see the GC and meet my friends for lunch and stay somewhere else in between.

We drove to GC from vegas ,as everywhere was booked at GC, but we went on to prescott in Arizona for a few days.

Holiday inn Express in tusayan is good value and very near.
