South West Scotland for 2 days

So we are going to a wedding at the end of June in Gretna - and should really catch up with family up there for lunch too!

So we have booked the train from London to Carlisle and we will be hiring a car from the Friday until Tuesday lunchtime.

So we will have from Sunday mid morning until Tuesday to do "stuff"! I think we will pencil in seeing my aunt in Sanquhar on the Tuesday morning on the way back to Carlisle.

Any thoughts/suggestions/places to stay - any castles etc to stay in?

How about Loch Lomond, Edinburgh, St Andrews or up to Glencoe and surrounds, I also love Inverary in Scotland too and Pitlochry and Perthshire. Plenty to see and do, just depends on what your interests are?

All the places mentioned are certainly stunning places to see but some are a fair drive from Gretna. If you are planning on going to Sanquhar on the way back from your trip, the west coast is lovely. You aren’t too far away from Turnberry which has stunning views and then you could visit Culzean Castle. Or a bit further north towards Glasgow then you could take in a quick trip to Loch Lomond.
If you went over the other way, you can drive into the Scottish Borders which is also a beautiful area of the country. You have lots of options.

I second Culzean castle for a visit , both it and its grounds are lovely - we often nip there in the summer holidays with the kids and spend hours there

If you have chance get the small ferry over to the Isle of Gigha. Fantastic pub/restaurant a 2 minute walk onto the island called the boathouse. Book ahead and sit outside. It’s glorious.

thanks to you all for your replies - we have booked an Air BnB log cabin just north of Castle Douglas.
We didn't fancy driving too far as we dont have long.

Aahhh- the ferry to Arran - I remember being stuck on Arran on a school trip as it was too windy for the ferry to dock

Will check out your other suggestions - thanks all.

We go to see DS on Arran in a fortnight and I'm hoping a- the wind dies down, b- the ferry doesn't go tech, and c - The Virus doesn't stop us in some way. It's like a lottery every time we go!
