Forget Politics! What About Apostrophes!

Apostrophes and plurals are not related!

If you're talking about things belonging to a plural, then the apostrophe is there just because of the possession - the plural is incidental.

boy
boys
boy's pizza (all to himself)
boy's pizzas (he's hungry!)
boys' pizza (they're sharing it!)
boys' pizzas (a few between them)

Exception to the rule: Acronyms or letters might have apostrophes in plurals, simply because otherwise they might be unclear: -

ADR's or ADRs because ADRS might suggest 1 four letter acronym, where the "S" stands for something other than plural..

4 a's is clearer than 4 as .

I can still remember the four lessons at Primary School in 1978 when we were taught about apostrophes. They make compete and utter sense to me. Just proving they need to be taught, properly, at the right stage of education. Is this still taught in Primary school? I could not however fit a kitchen in ten years. Nor can I work by bloody central heating. See other thread 🙄

Oh dear, I haven't read the entire thread, so apologies if this has come up already. I follow a very well known house cleaning 'influencer' on instagram (purely out if nosiness and incredulity). She has just had Christmas cards printed to send out to her friends and family.

Merry Christmas from the Surname's ! (Her actual surname complete with apostrophe)


I do feel for the poor fellow from the apostrophe protection society, he must feel so demoralised.
