Ayup Libby, watch yourself, sailing very close to the wind there.
We Yorkshire folk like value, but are like Eddie Murphy in Brewster’s Millions compared to many Scots I know.
Have you heard the rumour that the Grand Canyon was started by a Scotsman who lost a coin in a ditch?

when travelling in large groups we always ask for seperate checks. This way I don't feel guilty for having a few beers
It has never been a problem .. saves adding up too

That makes sense. Over the years i’ve had some lovely large group meals that have been ruined (for me) by the group having different and conflicting attitudes to splitting the bill.

Im lucky in that the two groups I”m most likely to eat out with these days have a similar approach to me. We split it evenly unless there is an obvious imbalance (usually around alcohol) in which case we adjust. Sometimes someone will have had one course plus tap water and in that scenario someone in the group will almost certainly point that out before the person themselves has to and make an adjustment. Sometimes you may pay a little more than the cost of your meal plus tip, sometimes a little less but it almost certainly balances out over time.

I know of friends who eat in groups where they all get their calculators out and work out the exact cost. That approach works for them! It’ll all about whether the people you are eating with are of a similar mindset i guess.

My approach now to large group meals when i know or suspect there will be bill shenanigans is to tot up roughly what i owe before the bill comes (always rounding up) and add on a tip. Then give the cash to someone and leave!

Same! 😂 Round up my total, then toss some extra £/$ on top, give it to those with the calculator and then stay the hell away from all the drama!

We have never tipped 25% and we have never had any problems.

Think you’ll be okay unless you’re planning on spending 5k on food. Tip threads, while interesting and useful, can sometimes become a little overheated. Hopefully you’ll have a great holiday and catch the same Florida bug as the rest of us.

Plus always bear that in mind when tipping... you eat where you can afford and you tip what you see fit for the service provided.

All the %'s on here are generally what the restaurant/diner will print on their bill as "recommendations". Nowhere when entering the USA does it say "Thou shall tip a minimum of 18%.

100% AGREE... Neither have we, and never will we, just because it's one of the options on the bill. We've tipped over that because of exceptional time and service and not based on a calculation.

20% is easy to calculate and our maximum and I'd like to know what the waiting staff are expecting if they want more than that!

We Brits have far too much of a guilt complex I think.
