Internet speeds in different areas
We’re in the process of moving.
We’ve just sold our house and have started viewing properties. Where we live now, although semi rural, we have great internet with Virgin Media. In all of our previous houses we’ve also had great internet with VM. Where we are looking to move to, a lot of the houses say the average download speed is very low (74Mb compared to ours now which states 1130Mb). Anyone live in an area with similarly low speeds? Will it be an issue? Our 16 year old loves to game and this is worrying me a little.

For most people I don't think 74mb is very low, thats about double what I get!
As far as I understand, anything over 20mb is adequate for gaming, above 50mb is good. And to be fair, once you start getting speeds in excess of that there will be little or absolutely no affect on gaming/streaming etc.. I should add, I'm not an expert, this is purely based on experience. We average between 35 and 40mb with Sky and have zero issues with anything we do, whether it be gaming, streaming, surfing (all at the same time across multiple devices).

20MB where we live and no problems at all with streaming etc. With that said it’s just two of us and no gaming (but neighbours with 5 in their household have no complaints either)
New cables just installed for 900MBs which would cost double what we pay. As per post above, I’m curious as to why anyone would need anything more than about 100MB right now? |

Actually, just realised I do game.. sort of.. as I use Zwift on my turbo trainer. In room where it’s set up I get just 7MB as it’s through the mains and don’t have any problems. Expect proper gaming needs more bandwidth though.

I know someone who has the top of the range 1000mb/s and I don't understand why you need it. We have 64mb/s which is the fastest we can get with BT in our area and can watch 4K movies on multiple devices/TVs/laptops/phones etc with no issues at all.
Gaming is actually quite a minor issue as the console handles most of the rendering of the graphics etc. and doesn't need to download too much, it's more TV streaming, especially in 4K, that uses more bandwidth.

Wow that's fast broadband.
We're with Vodafone and guaranteed 38mb. DS games on PC, DH on PlayStation, DD on Netflix and I work from home on video calls. Over Christmas all at the same time. We have a couple of Vodafone boosters around the house and all works fine. |

We have Sky superfast BB and on average get 60mb download speeds, again it's fine for working and streaming, we don't do gaming but have no issues with 4k streaming.

Semi rural area in South Wales here and very lucky to get 15mbps on a good day. Until 2-3 years ago our average was 1-3mbps, but I constantly had to keep getting in touch with BT to the extent that I had an executive team manager dealing with the case for me. It took 2 years to get the speed we have now.
This is perfectly sufficient for our needs, it runs Netflix Disney+ etc in HD (we have a 4K tv but no chance of running it in 4K), video calls generally work ok with an occasional lag or disconnection and it can be used on several phones/laptops at the same time in every room in the house. It’s good enough for our needs, but I think I can only dream of the speeds stated here unless I move 😂 |

I get around 59Mb with Sky, and my brother uses EE's 4G Internet and gets roughly 20-30Mb and both are perfectly fine for gaming
