We used Hertz, we did drive all the way to San Diego but dropped the car back at LAX.

The same advice I would give for any part of America. Alamo, Avis and Hertz. Always good to go with the main players. What a stunning drive as well

Is the Pacific Highway still closed in places?

Thank you! Will take a look into it.

Absolute novice so will have to do a lot of reading up!

Not planning on going until September 2019 when hopefully all will be open.

I just like to plan in advance because apparently Florida for our honeymoon in May isn't enough planning for me lol!

We (almost) did the same journey in reverse last summer - Escondido to San Jose.

We hired from Alamo (picked up in Vegas, drove to Escondido and dropped at San Jose). No one way fee. No nonsense at drop off - the gentleman who gave us our nil to pay slip recognised my Scottish accent immediately. He asked me "Glasgow or Edinburgh?". When I said Glasgow he then asked "Rangers or Celtic?". I resisted the temptation to reply Partick Thistle.

Unfortunately the PCH was closed north of Hearst Castle so we had to go inland. I believe that the road should reopen by the time you travel.

Be aware that traffic in the LA area tends to be stop/start (or stop/stop) so it can take longer to travel than the bare distance suggests.

I did SFO to LAx last week and used Hertz, with gold member the car was there waiting for me, was very quick and simple pick up, I had a Nissan Rogue with 20 miles on the clock

The PHC1 is still closed due to the land slide just north of Rugged rock and is going to be until mid 2019. We drove down from Monterey to Mcway Falls then turned around and drove back. I used the 101 to drive down to Pismo the next day. took about 2.45 hrs from Monterey

Done the same drive 3 times, always use Alamo so I can chose the SUV i like. San Fran is a fantastic city but you dont need a car , wait till your leaving and go back to the airport to pick it up, you will save a fortune in parking .After SF we go up to Napa Valley, then Monterray, then Santa Barbara, LA and downnto San Diego which is a great place to visit. Finally back to LA to drive back!
