We stayed in a condo at Indian Shores last year and used it as our base for exploring the area. Nice area with plenty of places to eat, we went to Bubba Gumps at St John pass one night which is nice to walk around.

You MUST go to Fort De Soto state park whist your there.

We've rented condos in Indian Shores 5 times now with our 6th trip in 45 days!

Lovely lovely area, no chain hotels or restaurants, a single lane road (only stretch of Guld Blvd that is single lane) so very easy to cross the road, lots of beach access points (most condos are situated very near to the nearest beach access or have their own access point), very laid back, wide soft white sand beach that has never been busy during our visits (Feb, Mar & Sep).
10 mins drive to Clearwater, 15 mions drive to St Petes Beach, 10 mins drive inland to Largo with every store, supermarket & restaurant you can think of.

Sorry if not clear in my post above; although no chain hotels or restaurants, there are plenty of 1-off independant places to stay & eat.

If looking for a condo, most on the bay have pools, many on the beach don't so something to bear in mind if that's important to you.
The beach condos tend to be a little more expensive but those on the bay are literally 2 mins extra walk to the beach!

It's definitely a gulf front condo with a pool we want.

I've googled Indian shores condos and have had quotes from a few. Still looking for the right one
