Is the keys safe

We are looking at adding a night to the keys into our trip next year and just wondered is it safe? Also what hotels would you recommend for one night? DH wants to drive the seven mile bridge

Its like anywhere else, you take sensible precautions and you shouldn't have any problems. Its a 4 hour drive from Miami to Key West so I don't know that I would go for one night.

Driving the seven mile bridge has been a life long wish of his might do 2nights then

Tinks - I did something similar last month and will give you a sample 1 night agenda:

Leave Orlando 0800
Key Largo - 1300 (Lunch Mrs Mac's Kitchen on the main road

Islamorada - 1500 - Hampton Inn (lovely, but corporate and not very Keysy...
pool, sea, cocktails, chill
Leave Islamorada 1000
Arrive Key West 1200
Explore & dinner
Leave Key West 1800
Arrive Orlando 0200 (with a couple of breaks)

We went to Marathon Turtle Hospital - amazing experience.

This really was a whistle stop tour, but I didn't want an extra night in Key West.

I never thought Key West was dangerous at all. Rowdy, yes, lots of drinking, yes, unsafe, no. Definitely not an environment for children after dark.

We stayed in Hawks Cay on Duck key - just outside of Marathon - was lovely there - lots of things for kids to do on site. Key West ... Would have been ok if it had just been DH and I - it's got a party feel to it - but I don't think it's for kids after dark! We drove up for the day had a meander and glad that we went for a look! We did the turtle hospital too - excellent.

At no point on our 5 days on the keys were we worried about safety. Go and enjoy that bridge! We have just done the skyline into St Petersberg... Now that is a fabulous road!
