I lost my beautiful Dad in January unexpectedly so didn’t have the opportunity to buy him a gift. My DDs bought my DH a Flash mug and a couple of T-shirts. It’s not the gift, it’s the love behind it.

FYI this is the first year I've not brought my dad a present because he said not to buy him anything and to use the money to buy something for the new house. Don't really see how thats rude.

Not rude but I would have bought something even if just posh biscuits or sweeties.

The rude comment was aimed at your 'tacky gifts' remark - which reads as if you're saying that any gifts others have bought are tacky; and as several people liked it and one or two others made remarks, I'm not alone. Maybe you phrased it wrongly.

I didn't mean it like that at all so I guess I either phrased it wrong or people took it the wrong way

He has lots of health conditions and on a strict diet so isn't really allowed sweets/biscuits, plus he's elderly and doesnt really have any hobbies so makes it difficult to know what to buy him.

I didn't outright refuse to buy him something ( which I think others are thinking I did), it was his request not to get anything.
