Live PM Debate

Please please can anyone tell me why this debate was necessary, when the only arbitrators in the PM contest are a few Tory Members

Not really a few Tory members. The Tory party has thousands in it within the UK. Basically they can only visit so many Tory old school venues so to reach the mass they have put on a tv debate. Personally I will watch as its going to be our future pm.

Let's not forget that it wasn't just the BBC which held a leadership debate, Channel 4 did the same last weekend.

I suppose the answer to the original question is: why not?

In simple terms, elected officials are hauled in from of Question Time, Any Questions and others but we're not voting on them at that time either.

Just because the "selectorate" of 160,000 conservative voters doesn't include me or others doesn't make it any less valid for the leaders to be held up to scrutiny, in fact I would argue that in such a context it is even more important their views are broadcast and analysed publicly.

Ultimately it will be down to the conservative party members to vote, and I for one feel a little less anxiety that the process is not being done totally behind closed doors.
