Great photo! I thought it could have been a merlin at first but looking at the colours on the wings i d say juvenile female kestrel

Thanks I took it on a compact camera on idiot mode setting. It does have a good optical zoom but everything else is down to the camera.

Where are you? This was taken in Bushy Park, so quite near to London.

If you go on the RSBP site you can put whatever bird your interested in and it will tell you a bit about them plus a record of their particular call. Quite facinating.

As others have said its a lovely looking common kestrel.

Jays are basically better looking magpies and wouldn't have had those talons.

I know what a jay looks like, it was just my first thought when it caught my eye from a distance. As I got closer I soon saw that it was a bird of prey but I couldn't quite match it up with the pictires on the RSPB website.

It was great that everyone could tell me that it was still very young and confirm that it was a kestrel.

Btw I don't have a smart phone, although that may have to change if we ever return to WDW.
