Mobile Phone use.

We don't usually take mobile phones on holiday but this time thinking of downloading and using Uber from time to time.
What's the cheapest way of using a phone when not in free Wifi areas? We are with Sky. Advice much appreciated.

I normally get a PAYG SIM from Three. For £10 you can get unlimited text and calls to UK numbers, and 6GB of data.
Means getting a different number just for holidays but it's never been a problem in the past for us.

I would recommend what Grant said, our phone contracts are with 3 anyway so we have the unlimited texts and calls to the U.K., but you’ll get the same stuff with a pay as you go 3 sim

Consider downloading your travel insurance onto the phone as well. DW took an unplanned trip over a kerbstone one year and the insurance information being immediately to hand solved a lot of problems.

Yes! Also at home or abroad store the contact phone numbers on the back of bank and credit cards in your phone incase they are lost or stolen esp if you do not have an app.

It’s the main reason why I haven’t moved my husband’s mobile contract to Sky , EE have a bolt on package for US usage. I used to stick a 3 payg sim in my phone but one year it refused to work in the US so now I don’t bother for me for going away. Worst scenario with Sky is if I needed to use mine in an emergency it’s £5 a day mostly I can find a WiFi connection and use messenger or WhatsApp if I need to call home. Our hire car comes with free SatNav anyway.

I only ever use what’s app in the states for sending messages and making calls, it’s very easy to get Wi-Fi signal in the parks , hotels, shops and attractions

Given how many places are now asking for mobile numbers for virtual queues, we're looking at getting a specific US sim card for the next trip so we've got a US number. We're just shopping round for the best deal on data.

We use 3 and its great for keeping in touch with the UK while we are in Florida, but couldn't use it to call US numbers when I needed to when we got stranded last year. Does anyone have a fix for this?

We always used to use H2O sim cards from ebay or amazon to get US numbers but I'm going to test the T-Mobile Usa E-Sim as soon as we can get back. I've downloaded the App ready.
