Self Assessment Help and Advice

DH has been doing Just eat for over a year now, we have all the receipts etc. Looking for advice either

Should we employ an accountant to do this for us, or are there any apps that we can use to sort out tax etc?

He has had a couple of repairs to the car in question, bought some new bags for deliveries. Plus lots of fuel receipts.
Any advise greatly received x

Self assessment is very straightforward if done online we did it first time in April this year with no problems, it will only require certain sections filling in which it will give you based on information you input. Plenty of guides on YouTube.

Has he got car insurance that allows him to be a delivery driver and a "car for hire or reward"

If not there are two problems

1) He isn't actually insured whilst working
2) He can't claim repairs and fuel receipts as he wasn't legally able to be providing that service

If he hasn't got the cover then the best he can do is claim mileage for the driving done

If he has got the cover then he should be able to claim it all (and the uplift cost of the insurance from general SDP+commute to hire and reward cover)

I have been doing SA for around 10 years and the online system has got easier over time. The main issue is checking which questions or information requests apply to you as a lot of them are specific to certain types of business. Maybe advice could help for an initial year’s return and then you may be ok to go it alone?

The important thing here is if you aren't doing it online the deadline for submitting in hard copy is very soon

I would suggest doing it yourself.

Even if you get an accountant - you have to do all the hard bit. Gathering receipts etc. That is the pain.
Filling in the form once you have done this is actually pretty straightforward.

HMRC do various webinars explaining Self Assessment and what you need to do in order to complete your return. You may want to have a look at some of these to see if you feel you can do your own accounts.

You could always hire an accountant this year and then see what he does and do it yourself next.

You may also want to consider claiming a mileage rate instead of all the individual motor expenses. Have a check of husbands mileage and see which works best for you. The first 10000 miles is 0.45 after that it’s 0.25p, bear in mind if you do this you can’t claim repairs, wear and tear, insurance petrol etc. I always find it is more beneficial to claim the flat rate.
Have a good think of everything husband pays in order to work, stationery, business use mobile phone etc It all brings the bill down. The webinars are good at stating allowable expenses.

If you have all your receipts and records you are almost there. The online inputting is fairly straight forward.

I assume you have already registered with HMRC ? The deadline for a paper return is 31/10/21 and the deadline for online and the payment is 31/01/22.

do it yourself

once you have cracked it you can print out your return and simpy repeat the next year with the new values/figures

claim the mileage rather than repairs ewtc etc fair simpler imo & 45p a mile more lucrative, just make sure has accurate records of miles done / to - from etc etc etc

they do ask for proof not as a rule but they do

as above loads of youtube vids to help
