If you check the airport website alot of them do a special assistance booklet which details the process, check in, security etc. I found this helped prepare my LO and he enjoyed finding the things on booklet too. We will be using it again. We did have an issue in security when they asked us to remove his ear defenders. It was my mistake as I didn't realise we'd be asked that so I hadn't prepared him. When we removed them I could see straight away he was getting anxious, I had to get down to his level and explain what was happening. Staff did let him through a side gate rather than walking through the machine. Once he had them back he was fine. As others have said definitely get the sunflower lanyard too x
