Newcastle - any bar/restaurant recommendations?

DS and his friends (all aged 30) are off to Newcastle for a football match in November and they are staying overnight and are looking for bars (not clubbing) and or restaurants that are easy going with a good vibe for the evening. No clubs because it’s going to take them 5-6 hours to get up there from where we are and they don’t really go clubbing anyway. Any recommendations from Newcastle Dibbers gratefully received. Many thanks everyone

For your sons age then it’s the quayside he needs to going to. There are loads of very nice pubs to frequent. Most are very stylish and upmarket if I do say so myself.

If you looking for a little bit quieter (a relative term because there are no really quiet pubs at the weekend on the Quayside) but classy pub then my daughter recommends Gino’s.

If your after a busy pub with lots of young 20 to 40’s then I would suggest the Pitcher and Piano. Both right on the river and right in the heart of the action.

Not from Newcastle but DS lives there. We like Pleased to meet you just off Grey Street and Wylam Brewery in Exhibition Park. Further along the Quayside from Levtweeney's recommendations in Ouseburne are the Tyne Bar, Free Trade Inn, Brinkburn Street Brewery and many more. Across the river in Gateshead Quays is By the River Brew co and Trakol restaurant.

Too many good places to choose from!

if they are willing to go slightly out of the centre then Ouseburn area would be my number one - lots of independent pubs with craft beers etc.
If they need feeding then we recently got a Hard Rock Cafe on the quayside area

Im guessing your son & his pals are away fans so Brentford?

Aged @30 im also guessing they want to avoid to the geordie shore wanabee/weekend millionaire / stag do crowd?

So before the game most pubs happy to accept away fans as long as acting like di**s / being lairy. especially those around the station... they will mostly be heaving especially the closer you get to SJP.

Post match personally I would stick to around the Westgate Road/station circuit.. The Bodega, Tillys, The Forth, The Town Wall, Newcastle Tap, The Telegraph , Split Chimp, The Bridge Hotel all great pubs that dont attract the above..

eats wise we have all the usual suspects chain wise in the city centre, down the quayside The Bridge Tavern (Not the Bridge Hotel as above) has great food, as has the Broad Chare a bit further down the Quay. Prima Italian is also a great shout. Dabawal on high bridge for great indian street style food. Booking eats would be recommended in the town centre as last two home games the town has been mobbed.. the new (misplaced) optimism about NUFC, sell out crowds, tons of students, stag do's & people generally going out ...

As others have mentioned imo the best drinking circuit in the town is Ouseburn, its a bit of out town east quayside but The Tanners, The Cumberland, The Ship, The Cluny, Tyne Bar, Free Trade Inn, Brinkburn all great pubs & most do food, The Ship being entirely veggie/vegan

They will have a great time, we had some Spurs pals up a couple of weeks back they always have a top time

Apologies thats a bit of a ramble on

Thank you everyone for your tips - have passed them on and DS was grateful because he’s never been to Newcastle before and he wanted to avoid the problems they had in Edinburgh when none of them knew where to head for so they ended up going back to their air bnb!

i will knock up a more detailed list, as newcastle fans they will be fine anywhere, some bars get a bit arsey about wearing colours later in the night.
