You can visit the Everglades without going so far as Miami. I would allow 4 hours for the drive down to the Miami area and the same for the way back. You would have enough time to pop into the Sawgrass Mall, walk round once, something to eat, toilet and drive back.

I don't think it would be worth trying to do it in a day. As others have said its 4 hours there and 4 hours back, have you thought of an overnight stay in Miami or near? Then you could make the most of the time and really see Miami and drive back via the Everglades.

As above. It's a long way just to see the Everglades near Miami. If you want that specific area I would consider an overnighter. It will be much less tiring.
If you are interested in the Everglades more generally and have a car you could head down as far as Shark Valley and do the loop there. It's about 3.5-4.5 hours or so each way (depending on where you start). Plus traffic. Whether it is worth it I am not sure. Not Everglades but could also do an airboat ride such as spirit of he swamp or one points south. Thus get to see some of the wildlife, without the driving. No airboats in the national park itself, but you get broadly same habitat but increasing the further south from Okeechobee you go. If going on a coach trip to the Everglades, still long day but more passenger than long hours driving. Be worth checking if they go to shark valley or the Anhinga trail, or take you to somewhere like Sawgrass for an airboat ride etc. Edited at 10:38 AM. |
