No, you can upgrade it beforehand. Or at any time before the Ultimate ticket runs out.

In theory there’s no benefit in buying the Ultimate ticket first and then upgrading it. The only reason for doing this is if the Ultimate ticket was bought as part of a package to get free dining.

Or to get 14 days of fastpasses - provided they transfer them when you upgrade.

My answer from Disney with reference to the upgrade prices was that I would get the wholesale price, £334 at time of asking, even though I bought my passes Direct for just short of £400
