As a note, we had no issue with 4 suitcases on the shinkansens we rode. We also spun our seats round as a group. We couldnt see fuji-san though as the cloud was really low.

We booked our shinkansen at the airport and the jr office staff had excellent english, they booked end window fuji side seats both there and back. This was the space behind our seats and plenty of luggage rack space.

We never had an issue with luggage size on the Shinkansen and we didn’t always prebook seats (there are carriages on each train where it’s first come, first served).

We had one medium-large case each and found that at a pinch you could even have put them between your knees and the seat in front, given the leg room available.

Since May 2020 you have to book a seat and luggage space if your bags exceed 160cm total across all dimensions.

Just checked and our suitcases wouldn’t exceed that, I can understand why you’d need to prebook trying to travel with larger though!
