The reservation system is currently in place until Jan 2023. Disney haven't said whether they will remove it or not.

Ever since Disney has started this park reservation system, there has generally been plenty of reservations left for the parks 1 or 2 months beforehand.

If you look at Disney’s park reservation page right now, you’ll see that all dates in April this year are still available. That’s just over a month away. The same sort of thing has been true since this started.

Even when park reservations have been limited, it’s generally only MK and/or HS that are unavailable. I don’t think I’ve ever seen AK or Epcot unavailable. So you’ll always be able to visit one Disney park, even if you are only booking your reservations a couple of days beforehand.

But, generally, I’d say as long as you buy your tickets 2 or 3 months before you go then you probably should be ok.

I was wondering all of this.. we have planned for 'rest days' in our villa but, if we decide we would like to go to a park we wont be able to? Is that right?

Or should we book the parks just incase and can we cancel if we dont feel like it on the day?

Back when fastpasses were a thing, it was generally suggested that you booked fastpasses even for rest days - just in case. I’d suggest doing the same with park reservations; book them on every day you can and then cancel if/when you don’t need them.

As I mentioned earlier, you’ll probably find that you can book the park reservations on the day or the day before. That certainly seems to be the case for Epcot; less so for the other parks (especially MK). Right now though you can book every park for tomorrow.
