Whilst I've never had my hair dyed at the hairdressers and don't use box dyes, I buy/use this, it's easy to use, spray on wet/clean hair and comb through and you can usually get it on offer from somewhere

I colour my own hair and then use garnier nutrisse multi lights highlighting kit. I really struggled to get it during first lock down, as I suspect a lot of people were doing their own hair at home.

It’s brush on to towel dried wet hair, leave for 30 mins or so, then just wash off. I usually do it after the main colouring.

I can do the back of my hair if I have to using a mirror but my DH has got got very good at helping.

I prefer colouring my hair with this than just a flat box colour.
