So ... are there any advantages of using the Caxton card over, say, the Halifax Clarity card ?

If you withdraw cash on the Clarity Card you will get charged interest from date of withdrawal. I've read the exchange rate is good tho so that would offset interest. You could always log on and pay it off while you are away.

I haven't been charged a fee. Got the card in 2014 for first visit. Didn't use it again until 2017.
I did notice that a got charged a few pence when I used a UK ATM to check balance and change pin.

Think of Caxton as a debit card and Clarity as a credit card. That’s all I take - works well.
