Normally!? Sure, but I checked Alamo's "small print" and didn't find any of the exclusions, for europe that is obviously the norm.

The unpaved road exclusion is in the fine print.

CDW does not include the following. Tyres, misfueling, lost keys, windscreen and undercarriage damage.
These only become covered if you take out the enhanced roadside assistance cover.

As Tspill all insurance policies contain exclusions, act of god, dangerous sports to name but 2.
CDW exclusions are as posted above, and clearly mentioned in policy.
Alamo are no different to others in this.
Some take extra to cover this others dont its personal choice.
Many have returned cars with damage to tyres not charged and just as many have.
It seems pot luck on this point but more lately being charged.
$35 to cover via Independant brokers 3 times that at desk,or take the risk.

Where does it state that on Alamo's or Hertz's website? As a law student I am quite thorough with reading the fine print. I would be quite happy if someone could provide a link with T&C's or something.

This is what Alamo customer service wrote me:
"CDW should cover the tires or tire damage in the case of an accident. Roadside protection is directed more towards, lost keys (including remote entry devices), towing (not related to an accident), flat tire service (if no inflated spare is available, vehicle will be towed), lockout service (if keys are locked inside the Vehicle), jumpstarts, and fuel delivery service for up to 3 gallons (or equivalent liters) of fuel."

Maybe head for a legal forum then.

This is a well trodden subject on this forum. For the average holiday maker, it is just a decision to make - take the risk or pay a few dollars and dont take the risk. When spending many thousands on a holiday, there are way more interesting things to be thinking about. For some it is just peace of mind.

They've quoted you the info.

"Roadside protection" is the same as "enhanced roadside assistance" as Mr T mentioned earlier i.e. it's an additional premium on top of standard CDW etc.

Many new cars in the UK don't come with a spare or 'emergency wheel' these days to save cost. My Citroen has a tyre seal and wheel inflation kit provided and I wonder how long before the USA starts following this money pinching idea?

Strange thing is though that provision is made in the luggage compartment for a spare wheel and they're offered as extras!

Section 17 D
Standard Alamo T&Cs.
This covers purchased extras section D to paraphrase. If purchased no charge for flat tyre service.
So by definition of not purchased you could be liable for charge.
I note that they say in this and other sections not result of accident.
I am not a legal student but it would seem logical to accept that anything caused in an accident CDW covers you.
Driving over a tack causing a flat not covered and maybe liable to charge.
This would be identical to UK car insurance you choose to add towing eg breakdown cover windscreen cover key cover all at a cost.
UK carhire is worse for excess and coverage luckily as I hire regularly for company use have excess etc covered via them many may have to use own insurance to cover this.

This is a general guide

Car hire companies almost all exclude glass, tyres, wheels and the undercarriage of the car from the cover provided by their Collision Damage Waiver products.

Normally glass is deemed to be both the windscreens and things like mirrors and lights, and the wheels and tyres exclusion covers everything from punctures to slashed tyres or stolen spare wheels.

As well as these areas, damage to the roof or underbody of the car is also excluded.

This is because the cover you get with your car hire is 'Collision Damage Waiver' therefore it covers just that - and damage to these other parts of the car do not normally involve a collision "Alamo have stated this in the reply" .
Also the car hire firms believe that damage in these areas is normally down to negligence on the part of the driver but whatever- most of us would feel really aggrieved to spend our holiday cash on a window chipped by a flying stone or a punctured tyre.

Be aware that in the vast majority of cases, taking out the car hire companies excess waiver does not extend cover to include this areas.

They're already doing it.
