ESTA Expired - do you need to apply again?

My mums ESTA expires in Jul 18 - we are going Aug 18

Can I just log on and update it or do I need to start a fresh application for her?

Sorry to jump on this thread OP but we have a similar query. Our Estas run out September 2017, we are not returning to the US until October 2018, so a whole year between expiry and next trip. Do we need to renew before current one runs out?

Seems unnecessary waste of a year on it, wouldn't we be better waiting and getting new ones nearer our trip or is it easier to get approval if it's a renewal? Surely this shouldn't make a difference?

For $15 I'd just renew it when the old one expired, personally. Saves the hassle of it being denied closer to the trip

Somewhere during the application proces (can't remember where) there will be a notification to say that there's already a valid esta until xxxx date and ask if you want to continue. I just ticked yes and then continued with the form.
