Flew this route at the end of March, beginning of April and loved it to be honest. Yeah, the BA 777's from Gatwick are old but the in-flight entertainment worked and the crew were lovely. Security and immigration were a breeze. Not much to do once you're airside at Tampa. The food court was being refurbished when we flew home so can't really comment on places to eat. Top marks from me.
However, I didn't have to drive from Manchester to Gatwick and vice versa and I know that the return leg after a 9hr flight was pretty rough for the driver. Would get the train next time.

Thanks everyone.
Tampa is currently cheaper than Orlando but more than Miami. Think we rather pay a bit extra to have more time there rather than the driving from Miami & back. We live in Durham so will be driving to Gatwick & getting hotels both sides of journey. I'm not expecting anyone to tell me what to do - just wanting people's experiences to help me decide. Thanks

My worst experience flying into Miami was when our flight was supposed to land at 5 pm and we planned to drive through to Orlando.
In fact the flight was delayed out, thunderstorms at Miami had us circling, once landed there was no gate as no flights could leave, we sat on a taxi way for 2 hours. Once off the plan immigration was packed, took 2 hours to get through. Picked up car at midnight! Shared driving to Orlando and arrived at 5 am. At least we got an upgraded room at Boardwalk as they felt sorry for us! |

One snippet is that Tampa can sometimes get allocated the 4 class 777 so if you are in the front section of club you may have a first class seat.

We did this route in summer 2014. Decided to finish the holiday with 3 nights at Clearwater so that's worth a thought as you are quite close from there.

Another vote for Gatwick to Tampa - I have done both Orlando and Tampa airports on previous trips - this year there was very little difference in price and I chose Tampa
