We tend to avoid the chains, I think you could be anywhere in the world in a Hard Rock for example. I also find then really expensive for what they are. We tried smaller local places and also had a couple of meals in an Irish pub... we had loads and it was very reasonable. Also ate in a diner on Staten Island, far cheaper than one of the faceless chains we saw everywhere.
If you`re in New York eat somewhere that`s only in New York, far more fun than the same old same old places.

That's an interesting option. Did you notice how that compared to the normal price if you don't pre-pay?

Did you still have to reserve a table or did you just turn up? Also, presumably you were still expected to leave a tip?

Cheers

That's a good point (although I'd argue that Irish Pub's aren't, by any stretch of the imagination, a New York original!).

We will probably be looking to eat wherever we can find good value (hints very welcome). I'm sure we will try shake shack at some point but, as we will be there for 6 days, we will have plenty of opportunity to try other places.

Definitely want to try a diner and a deli (although will probably avoid Katz as, I imagine, that is rather touristy and overpriced)

Although it was saying outside it was an Irish pub I think it had been New Yorked if you know what I mean, the same as all those Italian places we saw, and ate in too, just a bit quirky. We went in for a drink and stayed for lunch when we saw the plates coming out! Wherever we go we always try to eat in original one off places, we just like to try somewhere different

We'll have to keep our eyes open. Hopefully we'll strike it lucky with some good value food too.

Edit: I think my wife fancies having a meal in Chinatown at some point during our trip. Has anyone on here eaten in that area and would they recommend it?

Thanks

I think if it was just me and DH then we would eat all over, I loved Greenwich Village last time I went but when it’s for a teenagers birthday I think Hard Rock is one of the ‘coolest’ options depending on cost and we like the one in Orlando. Also we wouldn’t get the chance to eat at Hard Rock any other time as the nearest one to us is London which is the other end of the country! 😆

I did mean $35 not ££ give or take but yes you are quite correct.

13 subway trips (not returns) is the break even point for a 7 day pass, it’s worth bearing that in mind when planning.

Always good value for us too as we use that rather than walk everywhere the way some people do.

We walked into Katz and turned and walked out, it wasn’t for us.

One of my favourite places to eat is Murray’s Bagels, always full of locals for breakfast and lunch, fresh and bagels packed with filling and superb coffee too.

There is also a deli on the corner of 6th and 26th called Sunac foods. It does cooked breakfast and lunch, it has take out sandwiches and is generally just a good place and another place for the locals. Worth a visit.
