At the moment there are NO background checks, vehicle inspections, and mandatory insurance for the Uber drivers once they are logged into the app.
By accepting these rules when signing up to uber you agree to waive your rights when things go wrong
Your choice though if it means saving a little money.

They also have a system in which both driver and customer rate one another.
When a driver gets booked, their profile, picture, and rating will appear on the screen for you, so if they only have 2 out of five stars for example, you can quite easily cancel with them and choose someone else!

Background checks can't predict what someone WILL do. It isn't the first time a taxi driver has been accused of similar and I doubt very much it will be the last... in any country

Edited to add: I didn't use Uber in the end as the App wouldn't accept any of my cards declaring them all to be invalid. I used the Mears App instead

Used Uber yesterday to go from Hard Rock to I drive hotel. Arrived within 5 minutes, lovely lady driver who took us. Cost us $8, bargain. Would 100% use again.

I've taken loads of Uber trips over the past year in both San Francisco and New York. Never had an issue although there are legal issues with the traditional taxi services not happy that their business is being squeezed.

Also watch out for Surge pricing when there are more customers than drivers - the price goes up - however the app always tells you this beforehand.

Finally, this is an app based taxi. You can't call anyone up - you will need to have a smartphone and data to use it!
