It was our first trip this summer and we hit the parks straight away on our first full day. Too late to do much on arrival day as we flew into Sanford and from stepping off the plane to arriving arriving at the resort took 3 hours. Settling in was having a wander around the resort and grabbing a bite to eat before heading back to our room to unpack and then went to bed.

Reason for this is that on our last two trips abroad ( including Florida last year) our youngest two have started throwing up on day 2! We assume it's the heat and travel. As we only have a week at Disney, and travel day doesn't count- I don't feel like it gives us much time do what we'd like.
Do many dibbers start of their trips 'gently' before hitting the park action? Would literally stay somewhere cheap offsite - any recommendations?
Just jumping in here, we do 2 week’s offsite, but we use day 1 to get used to the new time zone, relax after travelling and do some shopping (mainly for new clothes, we take minimal clothing with us.) Our first trip as a couple we went to a park on day 1 and just found it too much, got tired and felt we didn’t get what we wanted out of the day (and that was without children.) Since then we used the day to get supplies in and go to the outlets.

We have an accidental settling in day as we arrive into Fort Lauderdale at two ish and aren't picking the car up til the following morning . We have little choice but to relax rather than jump straight into Orlando hyper mode.

Next year we have a long trip planned and for the first time ever we have booked a 4 night settling in period !

We are staying those 4 nights at The Hawthorn Suites LBV and will be using them to recuperate after the journey (bad arthritis and back problems will leave me stiff for a day or two after the flight )
I also end up feeling so tired I have felt physically sick before so can sympathise with OP's kids .

Although we have plans for those days they will not be like full on park days and should allow us to get into the swing nicely !

Plan to ease ourselves in by getting up later and do some relaxing, get our shopping and visit a few places that we have never been to before.
Have always felt on previous trips that we were wasting valuable park time when we visited beyond the parks .
It seemed like the arrival day/night was a waste of money as we were invariably delayed and arrived at night and all we were fit for was going to bed!

Now we are getting older it seems to make sense to pace ourselves more !

I have a feeling that the planned trip will be pretty exhausting if we do not incorporate some serious downtime

I know the planning is proving pretty tiring in itself ...but a nice problem to have

Snap we're there a few months later but for 3 nights (which I consider 2 acclimatisation days). Having a child along we're also looking forward to the suite while we adjust to the timezone before we're all in the same room for a long period

This year we added 3 nights on at the beginning and stayed in Celebration, it was lovely and we'll do this again - we had pool time, shopped, went for walks, had some lovely meals and lots of drinks. The added bonus is you can check into your Disney resort early morning so have that first day as a full day.
