I am going to be the difficult one and say, whilst I love all the other things about a Florida holiday, and have been loads of other places (Vero, Naples, Marco Island, Miami etc), I cannot, in all honesty say I would be happy doing not Disney at all. I suppose a MNSSHP might placate me, but I am not sure.
We are not Universal fans (except we love the HP stuff), and do not go to SW. Never done Legoland - we have done the Windsor one and I think that is enough for us.
Tough decision 😒

We did last two weeks in August a few years ago and loved it.
American kids have got back to school, parks are quieter than July/early August.
Weather is great.
Book it 👍🤣

Would be May for me. We did a “Disney Free” trip one June.

There was something missing. We went to Universal, Seaworld, Busch and shopping. Had a great time but for the cost, if I had choice between a Disney holiday and an “Orlando” holiday I’m firmly in the Disney camp.

Bear in mind we had no car and hated staying on IDrive which certainly had something to do with it.

For us it’s a long way to go without a Disney fix. And a bigger one than just MNSSHP.

It is a tough decision, at the moment I think I'd be happy not doing Disney and would prefer a change, but that's because we've just got back and did nothing but Disney for the first 2 weeks, by next year I'll probably be ready to do it all over again.
Before we went this year we had decided we would have a year off next year and go somewhere else, I've been looking at other parts of USA but I don't think the budget will stretch to that as hotels are so expensive in New York, LA, SanFran etc. 2 weeks all inclusive at a beach resort, either Caribbean or med just doesn't do it for us either.
At the moment the 3 weeks in August has more advantages, I just need to look at it as a different type of holiday and forget Disney world is just up the road.

We will definitely have a car so will get out and about to lots of places we've never been before, I also hate I Drive so hopefully wouldn't have to go anywhere near it, other than to Seaworld. We will probably stay in a villa or a condo, our favourite area is Lake Buena Vista, but unfortunately can't rent a villa there.

I couldn’t go to Orlando and not do mainly Disney.

Disney is the only reason that Orlando is a big tourist destination!

So Option 1 for me.

If you're looking for a way to save a few $$ then you could have a look at Airbnb or other rental sites and rent a villa near LA or San Fran and then another one up in Arizona . I priced up a 16 day holiday (without flights) for August 2019. 2 different rentals, both with a pool, full kitchen etc. Day trips to Death Valley, Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, Vegas, National Parks. A hotel for a couple of nights in Vegas. Nice 4x4 rental. This all came to 3.8k so not too bad. Flights
and spending money would be another 3.5k so all in for 7.3k.

We did a similar road trip back in 2002 with the dollar at 1.8 to the pound and had an amazing time.

We did a non Disney trip last August and certainly missed the mouse. Going back to Disney this year which provides full entertainment from 7am to midnight!

For me it would be option 1. I couldn’t go to Orlando and not do Disney. I know people always say that there is more to Florida than the parks, but the parks are the bits that make me love the most. I don’t really enjoy shopping as it gets boring quickly, I don’t mind a quick trip to the beach, but there’s beaches everywhere. For me Disney is like being immersed in another world and I wouldn’t get that from visiting other bits of Florida.
